Frequently asked question

Helpful answers for every grow.

My microgreens are still yellow. Is this normal?

Yes. During germination, microgreens grow without light, so they naturally appear pale yellow. Once placed on a bright windowsill or under a grow light, they'll gradually develop the healthy, natural colour of their variety over the next 24–48 hours.

How often should I water my microgreens?

There isn't a fixed schedule. Check your growing mats daily. When they begin to feel slightly dry, or the tray feels noticeably lighter when lifted, it's time to bottom water again.

Can I use tap water?

Yes. Clean tap water is perfectly suitable in most areas. If your tap water is heavily chlorinated, allowing it to stand for a few hours before use may help.

Do I need a grow light?

Not necessarily. A bright windowsill is often enough, especially during spring and summer. A grow light simply provides more consistent results throughout the year.

Why are my microgreens leaning?

Microgreens naturally grow towards the strongest light source. Rotate your tray every day or two to encourage straighter, more even growth.

Can I harvest only part of the tray?

Absolutely. This is actually how I enjoy mine. I simply harvest what I need for each meal and leave the remaining microgreens growing for a little longer, so I can enjoy fresh greens over several days.

Can I reuse the growing mats?

No. For the healthiest and most successful grow, always use fresh growing mats for every new growing cycle.

How long do microgreens take to grow?

Most varieties are ready to harvest within 7–14 days, depending on the variety and growing conditions.

What room temperature is best?

Microgreens grow best at approximately 20–23°C. They can still grow outside this range, although growth may be a little slower.

Can I eat the roots?

No. Harvest by cutting the stems just above the growing mats. The roots and growing mats are not intended to be eaten.

How should I store harvested microgreens?

For the freshest flavour and highest nutritional value, harvest just before eating whenever possible.

If storing them, place the unwashed microgreens in an airtight container lined with kitchen paper and refrigerate. Wash them only just before serving.

Why do some seeds still have their shells attached?

This is completely normal and usually happens during germination. Most seed hulls will fall off naturally as the microgreens continue to grow. If a few remain, you can gently remove them by hand before harvesting.

My microgreens don't all grow at the same height. Is something wrong?

Not at all. Slight differences in height are perfectly natural and won't affect the quality or flavour of your harvest.
