Microgreens growing guide

Your step-by-step guide to growing fresh microgreens at home.

Welcome to my world of microgreens.

I'm so happy you're here.

Growing your own fresh microgreens is simple, rewarding and one of the easiest ways to bring fresh, nutrient-rich greens into your everyday life.

Whether this is your first grow or you're already familiar with microgreens, this guide will walk you through each step, from preparing your first tray to harvesting your home-grown greens.

Take your time, enjoy the process and remember - every tray begins with a handful of seeds and a little patience.

Before You Begin

Before your first grow, wash both trays with warm water and allow them to dry completely.

For the best results, you'll also need:

  • Clean water

  • A bright windowsill or grow light

  • A room temperature between 20–23°C

Step 1 - Preparing Your Growing Tray

Begin with the growing tray with drainage holes.

Take 6 growing mats and fully immerse them in clean water until they are completely saturated.

Lift each mat out of the water and gently turn it once or twice, allowing any excess water to drip away naturally.

Do not squeeze the mats, as this may damage their structure.

Once the mats have stopped dripping, place them side by side inside the growing tray until the entire base is covered.

Your tray is now ready for sowing.

Step 2 - Sowing Your Seeds

Each transparent sachet contains the perfect amount of organic seeds for one growing mat.

Open one sachet and evenly spread the seeds across the surface of one prepared mat.

Repeat this process for all 6 mats, using one sachet per mat.

Once all six mats have been sown, lightly mist the seeds with clean water using the spray bottle included in your kit.

The seeds should be evenly moistened, but avoid over-spraying or creating puddles.

If you notice water collecting in the tray, gently pour away the excess. The growing mats should remain moist, but there should never be standing water.

Step 3 - Weighted Germination

Cover the growing tray with the second tray (without drainage holes).

Place it upside down, so it sits securely on top of the growing tray rather than acting as a dome.

This gentle pressure helps keep the seeds in close contact with the growing mats, encouraging stronger root development and more even germination.

Place a light weight on top of the tray. A book, a bag of rice, or another light household item works perfectly.

Leave the tray covered like this for approximately 2 days.

Step 4 - Humidity Dome

After approximately 2 days, remove the weight.

Turn the same tray over and place it back on top to create a humidity dome.

This gives the young seedlings room to grow while maintaining the warmth and humidity they need during the final stage of germination.

Leave the humidity dome in place for approximately 24 hours.

Step 5 - Light & Bottom Watering

After approximately 24 hours, remove the humidity dome completely.

Give the young seedlings one final light mist using the spray bottle included in your kit.

This is the last time you will water from above.

Now place the tray without drainage holes underneath the growing tray with holes. From this point onwards, it becomes your bottom watering tray.

Immediately place your tray on a bright windowsill or under a grow light.

Your microgreens should receive 12-16 hours of light each day. If you're growing them on a windowsill, rotate the tray every day or two to encourage even growth.

Don't worry if your microgreens are still pale yellow at this stage. This is completely normal. Once exposed to light, they will naturally turn a vibrant green over the next 24–48 hours.

From now on, water only from below.

When the growing mats begin to feel slightly dry, or you notice that the tray feels lighter when lifted, it's time to water again.

Fill the bottom tray with clean water until it is just over halfway full, allowing the growing tray to sit in the water so the roots can absorb moisture through the drainage holes.

Leave the tray to soak for approximately 10 minutes, then pour away any remaining water.

Never leave the growing tray sitting in standing water. The growing mats should remain evenly moist, but never waterlogged.

Continue watering in this way until your microgreens are ready to harvest.

Step 6 - Harvesting

Most microgreens are ready to harvest 7–14 days after sowing, depending on the variety and growing conditions.

Rather than counting the days, let your microgreens guide you.

They are ready to harvest when:

  • They have developed the characteristic colour of their variety.

  • The seed leaves (cotyledons) are fully open.

  • They have reached the typical harvesting height for their variety (usually around 5–10 cm).

  • The first true leaves are just beginning to appear.

Using clean scissors, cut the microgreens just above the growing mats.

Avoid pulling them from the mats, as this may bring roots or fibres into your harvest.

For the freshest flavour and highest nutritional value, enjoy your microgreens as soon as possible after harvesting.

Tip: One of my favourite ways to enjoy microgreens is to harvest only what I need for each meal. The remaining microgreens can continue growing for a little longer, so I always have fresh greens ready for my next meal.

If you wish to store them, place the unwashed microgreens in an airtight container (I use glass one) lined with kitchen paper and refrigerate. They are best enjoyed within 5–7 days.

Wash them gently just before serving.
