Rocket

Everything you need to know about growing, harvesting and enjoying Rocket microgreens at home.

Bold · Peppery · Distinctive

Rocket microgreens bring a distinctive peppery character to the smallest of leaves. Their fresh, slightly spicy flavour makes them an easy way to add depth and personality to simple everyday dishes.

A little goes a long way, making Rocket particularly lovely as a finishing green when you want freshness with a more pronounced flavour.

Flavour

Peppery · Fresh · Slightly nutty

Rocket has a recognisable peppery flavour with a gentle bitterness and subtle nutty notes. Its taste is more pronounced than milder varieties such as broccoli.

Growing Level

Moderate

Rocket is a little more delicate than some beginner varieties. Its seeds benefit from careful watering, good airflow and attention to moisture levels during germination.

Growing Time

Approximately 8–12 days

Growing conditions such as temperature, light, airflow and watering can influence development. Look at the growth of the plants themselves rather than relying only on the number of days.

Soaking

No soaking required.

Rocket seeds can be sown directly onto a thoroughly moistened growing mat.

Germination

After sowing, keep the seeds covered and in darkness during the initial germination period.

Rocket seeds naturally become slightly gelatinous when wet, so avoid excessive moisture. Once the young shoots are established, uncover the tray and move it into light.

Watering

Keep the growing mat evenly moist without allowing it to become waterlogged.

Once the roots are established, bottom watering is preferable. Add water to the reservoir tray below and allow the growing mat to absorb moisture from underneath.

Avoid overwatering, particularly during the early stages of growth.

Light

Once uncovered, place your Rocket microgreens in a bright location with good indirect natural light or beneath a suitable grow light.

Adequate light encourages compact growth and helps the leaves develop their fresh green colour.

When to Harvest

Rocket microgreens are generally ready when the stems are well developed and the cotyledons have fully opened and turned green.

Harvest just above the growing mat using clean scissors or a clean, sharp blade.

Best With

Eggs · Salads · Pasta · Pizza · Sandwiches · Bowls · Fish · Cheese

Rocket works particularly well as a finishing green. Add it just before serving to preserve its fresh texture and distinctive peppery flavour.

Storage

For the best quality, harvest only what you need whenever possible.

If storing harvested microgreens, make sure they are dry before placing them in a clean container in the refrigerator. Excess moisture can shorten their freshness.

Wash before eating and enjoy while fresh.

Good to Know

Rocket seeds are mucilaginous, meaning they develop a naturally gel-like coating when they come into contact with water. This is completely normal.

Because of this, Rocket prefers careful moisture management and should not be soaked before sowing.

Why Grow Rocket?

Rocket is a beautiful choice when you want a microgreen with a little more character. Its distinctive peppery flavour can transform even the simplest meal, while its delicate young leaves make an elegant finishing touch.

Grow it. Cut it fresh. Add a little character.
