Flavour
Mild · Fresh · Slightly sweet
Pac Choi Red has a clean, delicate brassica flavour with subtle sweetness. It is considerably milder than stronger varieties such as radish or mustard.
Growing Level
Easy
Pac Choi Red is a beginner-friendly microgreen that grows reliably with consistent moisture, good airflow and adequate light.
Growing Time
Approximately 8–12 days
Growing conditions such as temperature, light, airflow and watering can influence development. Use the appearance and tenderness of your microgreens as your main guide when deciding when to harvest.
Soaking
No soaking required.
Pac Choi Red seeds can be sown directly onto a thoroughly moistened growing mat.
Germination
After sowing, keep the seeds covered and in darkness during the initial germination period.
Once the seeds have germinated and the young shoots are established, uncover the tray and move it into light.
Watering
Keep the growing mat consistently moist without allowing it to become waterlogged.
Once the roots are established, bottom watering is preferable. Add water to the reservoir tray below and allow the growing mat to absorb moisture from underneath.
Good airflow and balanced moisture help encourage healthy, even growth.
Light
Once uncovered, place your Pac Choi Red microgreens in a bright location with good indirect natural light or beneath a suitable grow light.
Adequate light encourages compact growth and helps the young plants develop their characteristic colour.
When to Harvest
Pac Choi Red microgreens are generally ready when the stems are well developed and the cotyledons are fully open and well coloured.
Harvest just above the growing mat using clean scissors or a clean, sharp blade.
Best With
Eggs · Salads · Bowls · Noodles · Rice dishes · Fish · Stir-fries · Asian-inspired dishes
Its combination of mild flavour and natural colour makes Pac Choi Red especially attractive as a fresh finishing green.
Storage
For the best quality, harvest only what you need whenever possible.
If storing harvested microgreens, make sure they are dry before placing them in a clean container in the refrigerator. Excess moisture can shorten their freshness.
Wash before eating and enjoy while fresh.
Good to Know
Pac Choi belongs to the Brassica family and is closely related to Tatsoi and other Asian greens.
Pac Choi Red offers a similar gentle flavour to the white variety, but its naturally deeper colouring gives it a distinctive appearance in both the growing tray and finished dishes.
