Mizuna Red
Everything you need to know about growing, harvesting and enjoying Mizuna Red microgreens at home.

Mild · Peppery · Colourful
Mizuna Red microgreens combine delicate flavour with beautifully coloured young leaves and stems. Fresh and gently peppery, they bring more character than very mild varieties without the stronger heat associated with radish or mustard.
Their subtle colour makes them particularly lovely as a finishing green, adding both freshness and visual interest to everyday dishes.
Flavour
Mild · Fresh · Gently peppery
Mizuna Red has a clean, delicate flavour with subtle mustard-like and peppery notes. The flavour is gentle enough for everyday use while still adding a little character to a dish.
Growing Level
Easy
Mizuna Red is a beginner-friendly variety that grows reliably with consistent moisture, good airflow and adequate light.
Growing Time
Approximately 8–12 days
Growing conditions such as temperature, light, airflow and watering can influence development. Use the appearance and tenderness of your microgreens as your main guide when deciding when to harvest.
Soaking
No soaking required.
Mizuna seeds can be sown directly onto a thoroughly moistened growing mat.
Germination
After sowing, keep the seeds covered and in darkness during the initial germination period.
Once the seeds have germinated and the young shoots are established, uncover the tray and move it into light.
Watering
Keep the growing mat consistently moist without allowing it to become waterlogged.
Once the roots are established, bottom watering is preferable. Add water to the reservoir tray below and allow the growing mat to absorb moisture from underneath.
Good airflow and balanced moisture help encourage healthy, even growth.
Light
Once uncovered, place your Mizuna Red microgreens in a bright location with good indirect natural light or beneath a suitable grow light.
Adequate light encourages compact growth and helps the young plants develop their characteristic colour.
When to Harvest
Mizuna Red microgreens are generally ready when the stems are well developed and the cotyledons are fully open and well coloured.
Harvest just above the growing mat using clean scissors or a clean, sharp blade.
Best With
Eggs · Salads · Sandwiches · Wraps · Bowls · Avocado · Fish · Asian-inspired dishes
Its combination of delicate flavour and colour makes Mizuna Red especially attractive as a fresh finishing green.
Storage
For the best quality, harvest only what you need whenever possible.
If storing harvested microgreens, make sure they are dry before placing them in a clean container in the refrigerator. Excess moisture can shorten their freshness.
Wash before eating and enjoy while fresh.
Good to Know
Mizuna belongs to the Brassica family and is often associated with Japanese cuisine.
Compared with stronger mustard microgreens, Mizuna offers a much gentler peppery character. The Red variety also brings additional colour to the growing tray and finished plate.
