Komatsuna Red
Everything you need to know about growing, harvesting and enjoying Komatsuna Red microgreens at home.

Mild · Fresh · Colourful

Their natural colouring makes them particularly lovely as a finishing green, adding both freshness and visual contrast without overpowering the dish.
Flavour
Mild · Fresh · Gently peppery
Komatsuna Red has a delicate brassica flavour with subtle mustard and peppery notes. It remains gentler than stronger mustard varieties, with a fresh and slightly sweet finish.
Growing Level
Easy
Komatsuna Red is a beginner-friendly microgreen that grows reliably with consistent moisture, good airflow and adequate light.
Growing Time
Approximately 8–12 days
Growing conditions such as temperature, light, airflow and watering can influence development. Use the appearance and tenderness of your microgreens as your main guide when deciding when to harvest.
Soaking
No soaking required.
Komatsuna Red seeds can be sown directly onto a thoroughly moistened growing mat.
Germination
After sowing, keep the seeds covered and in darkness during the initial germination period.
Maintain consistent moisture without saturating the growing mat. Once the seedlings are established, uncover the tray and move it into light.
Watering
Keep the growing mat consistently moist without allowing it to become waterlogged.
Once the roots are established, bottom watering is preferable. Add water to the reservoir tray below and allow the growing mat to absorb moisture from underneath.
Good airflow and balanced moisture help encourage healthy, even growth.
Light
Once uncovered, place your Komatsuna Red microgreens in a bright location with good indirect natural light or beneath a suitable grow light.
Adequate light encourages compact growth and helps the young plants develop their characteristic colouring.
When to Harvest
Komatsuna Red microgreens are generally ready when the stems are well developed and the cotyledons are fully open and well coloured.
Harvest just above the growing mat using clean scissors or a clean, sharp blade.
Best With
Eggs · Salads · Bowls · Sandwiches · Noodles · Rice dishes · Fish · Asian-inspired dishes
Its combination of gentle flavour and natural colour makes Komatsuna Red especially useful as a fresh finishing green.
Storage
For the best quality, harvest only what you need whenever possible.
If storing harvested microgreens, make sure they are dry before placing them in a clean container in the refrigerator. Excess moisture can shorten their freshness.
Wash before eating and enjoy while fresh.
Good to Know
Komatsuna is a Japanese leafy vegetable belonging to the Brassica family and is sometimes called Japanese mustard spinach, although it is not a true spinach.
Komatsuna Red offers a similar gentle flavour to the green variety, while its deeper natural colouring creates beautiful contrast in both the growing tray and finished dishes.

Komatsuna Red brings together delicate flavour and natural colour in an easy-to-grow variety. It is gentle enough for everyday meals but visually distinctive enough to make even a simple plate feel a little more considered.
