Komatsuna Green

Everything you need to know about growing, harvesting and enjoying Komatsuna Green microgreens at home.

Mild · Fresh · Gently Mustardy

Komatsuna Green microgreens are tender, fresh and pleasantly mild, with a subtle mustard-like character. Their delicate green leaves offer more personality than very mild greens while remaining gentle enough for everyday meals.

Fresh and versatile, Komatsuna Green works beautifully in salads, bowls, sandwiches and Asian-inspired dishes where you want a clean green flavour without too much heat.

Flavour

Mild · Fresh · Gently peppery

Komatsuna Green has a delicate brassica flavour with subtle mustard and peppery notes. It is milder than stronger mustard varieties and has a fresh, slightly sweet finish.

Growing Level

Easy

Komatsuna Green is a beginner-friendly microgreen that grows reliably with consistent moisture, good airflow and adequate light.

Growing Time

Approximately 8–12 days

Growing conditions such as temperature, light, airflow and watering can influence development. Use the appearance and tenderness of your microgreens as your main guide when deciding when to harvest.

Soaking

No soaking required.

Komatsuna Green seeds can be sown directly onto a thoroughly moistened growing mat.

Germination

After sowing, keep the seeds covered and in darkness during the initial germination period.

Maintain consistent moisture without saturating the growing mat. Once the seedlings are established, uncover the tray and move it into light.

Watering

Keep the growing mat consistently moist without allowing it to become waterlogged.

Once the roots are established, bottom watering is preferable. Add water to the reservoir tray below and allow the growing mat to absorb moisture from underneath.

Good airflow and balanced moisture help encourage healthy, even growth.

Light

Once uncovered, place your Komatsuna Green microgreens in a bright location with good indirect natural light or beneath a suitable grow light.

Adequate light encourages compact growth and helps the leaves develop their fresh green colour.

When to Harvest

Komatsuna Green microgreens are generally ready when the stems are well developed and the cotyledons are fully open and green.

Harvest just above the growing mat using clean scissors or a clean, sharp blade.

Best With

Eggs · Salads · Bowls · Sandwiches · Noodles · Rice dishes · Fish · Asian-inspired dishes

Its gentle flavour makes Komatsuna Green particularly versatile and easy to use as a fresh finishing green.

Storage

For the best quality, harvest only what you need whenever possible.

If storing harvested microgreens, make sure they are dry before placing them in a clean container in the refrigerator. Excess moisture can shorten their freshness.

Wash before eating and enjoy while fresh.

Good to Know

Komatsuna is a Japanese leafy vegetable belonging to the Brassica family and is sometimes referred to as Japanese mustard spinach, although it is not actually a true spinach.

As a microgreen, its flavour is tender and delicate, with just enough mustard-like character to distinguish it from milder leafy varieties.

Why Grow Komatsuna Green?

Komatsuna Green offers a beautiful balance between mild and distinctive. Its tender texture and gentle mustard notes make it easy to enjoy every day while still bringing something different to your growing collection.

Grow it. Cut it fresh. Enjoy gentle flavour.
