Kohlrabi Red

Everything you need to know about growing, harvesting and enjoying Kohlrabi Red microgreens at home.

Mild · Fresh · Colourful

Kohlrabi Red microgreens are tender and fresh with delicate green leaves and beautifully coloured stems. Their mild flavour makes them wonderfully versatile, while their purple-red tones bring natural colour and contrast to the plate.

Easy to enjoy and visually striking, they are a lovely everyday microgreen for salads, bowls, sandwiches and finished dishes.

Flavour

Mild · Fresh · Slightly sweet

Kohlrabi Red has a gentle brassica flavour with subtle sweetness and a fresh, clean finish. It is much milder than stronger varieties such as radish or mustard.

Growing Level

Easy

Kohlrabi Red is a beginner-friendly variety that grows reliably with consistent moisture, good airflow and adequate light.

Growing Time

Approximately 8–12 days

Growing conditions such as temperature, light, airflow and watering can influence development. Use the appearance of your microgreens as your main guide when deciding when to harvest.

Soaking

No soaking required.

Kohlrabi seeds can be sown directly onto a thoroughly moistened growing mat.

Germination

After sowing, keep the seeds covered and in darkness during the initial germination period.

Once the seeds have germinated and the young shoots are established, uncover the tray and move it into light.

Watering

Keep the growing mat consistently moist without allowing it to become waterlogged.

Once the roots are established, bottom watering is preferable. Add water to the reservoir tray below and allow the growing mat to absorb moisture from underneath.

Good airflow and balanced moisture help encourage healthy, even growth.

Light

Once uncovered, place your Kohlrabi Red microgreens in a bright location with good indirect natural light or beneath a suitable grow light.

Adequate light encourages compact growth and helps the stems develop their characteristic colour.

When to Harvest

Kohlrabi Red microgreens are generally ready when the stems are well developed and the cotyledons are fully open.

Harvest just above the growing mat using clean scissors or a clean, sharp blade.

Best With

Eggs · Salads · Sandwiches · Wraps · Bowls · Avocado · Fish · Soups

Their mild flavour makes them easy to pair with everyday food, while their colourful stems make them especially attractive as a finishing green.

Storage

For the best quality, harvest only what you need whenever possible.

If storing harvested microgreens, make sure they are dry before placing them in a clean container in the refrigerator. Excess moisture can shorten their freshness.

Wash before eating and enjoy while fresh.

Good to Know

Kohlrabi belongs to the Brassica family, alongside broccoli, kale, cabbage and radish.

Fine white root hairs may appear around the roots during germination. These are a normal part of healthy root development and can sometimes be mistaken for mould.

Why Grow Kohlrabi Red?

Kohlrabi Red combines everything that makes an everyday microgreen easy to love — gentle flavour, simple growing and naturally beautiful colour.

Its delicate leaves and colourful stems add freshness without overpowering the food around them.

Grow it. Cut it fresh. Add natural colour.
