Fenugreek

Everything you need to know about growing, harvesting and enjoying Fenugreek microgreens at home.

Aromatic · Fresh · Distinctive

Fenugreek microgreens have a distinctive flavour that sets them apart from many of the milder varieties. Their tender green leaves bring fresh, slightly earthy notes with a subtle sweetness and gentle bitterness.

A little more unusual and aromatic, Fenugreek is a lovely variety for adding depth to salads, bowls and dishes inspired by Indian and Middle Eastern cooking.

Flavour

Earthy · Aromatic · Slightly bitter

Fenugreek has a distinctive savoury flavour with subtle sweetness and a gently bitter finish. Its characteristic aroma becomes more noticeable as the microgreens develop.

Growing Level

Easy

Fenugreek is relatively straightforward to grow. Its larger seeds germinate readily when given consistent moisture, good airflow and suitable growing conditions.

Growing Time

Approximately 8–12 days

Growing conditions such as temperature, light, airflow and watering can influence development. Use the appearance and tenderness of your microgreens as your main guide when deciding when to harvest.

Soaking

Soaking recommended — approximately 6–8 hours.

Fenugreek seeds benefit from soaking before sowing. This helps hydrate the relatively large, firm seeds and encourages more even germination.

Drain thoroughly after soaking before spreading the seeds across the prepared growing mat.

Germination

After sowing, keep the seeds covered and in darkness during the initial germination period.

Maintain consistent moisture without saturating the growing mat. Once the shoots are established, uncover the tray and move it into light.

Watering

Keep the growing mat consistently moist without allowing it to become waterlogged.

Once the roots are established, bottom watering is preferable. Add water to the reservoir tray below and allow the growing mat to absorb moisture from underneath.

Good airflow is particularly helpful as the plants become denser.

Light

Once uncovered, place Fenugreek microgreens in a bright location with good indirect natural light or beneath a suitable grow light.

Adequate light encourages stronger, more compact growth and healthy green leaves.

When to Harvest

Fenugreek microgreens can be harvested when the stems are well developed and the young leaves have opened.

Harvest just above the growing mat using clean scissors or a clean, sharp blade. Younger growth generally offers a more delicate flavour.

Best With

Salads · Bowls · Eggs · Curries · Lentils · Rice dishes · Vegetables · Indian-inspired dishes

Fenugreek has more character than many mild microgreens, so even a small amount can add noticeable flavour to a dish.

Storage

For the best quality, harvest only what you need whenever possible.

If storing harvested microgreens, make sure they are dry before placing them in a clean container in the refrigerator. Excess moisture can shorten their freshness.

Wash before eating and enjoy while fresh.

Good to Know

Fenugreek is different from many of the brassica varieties in your collection. It belongs to the legume family, alongside peas and beans.

Its seeds are also widely used as a spice, while the fresh leaves are used as a culinary herb in several cuisines. As a microgreen, it offers another way to experience its distinctive flavour while the plant is still young and tender.

Why Grow Fenugreek?

Fenugreek is a lovely choice when you want to grow something a little different. Its aromatic flavour brings depth and variety to a microgreens collection dominated by milder leafy greens.

Grow it. Cut it fresh. Discover something different.
