Cabbage Red

Everything you need to know about growing, harvesting and enjoying Red Cabbage microgreens at home.

Mild · Fresh · Colourful

Red Cabbage microgreens are delicate, fresh and beautifully colourful, combining tender green leaves with striking reddish-purple stems. Their mild flavour makes them easy to use across everyday meals, while their natural colour brings an elegant finishing touch to the plate.

Gentle enough to pair with almost anything, they are a lovely choice when you want freshness, texture and visual interest without a strong or spicy flavour.

Flavour

Mild · Fresh · Slightly earthy

Red Cabbage microgreens have a clean, gentle flavour with subtle cabbage and earthy notes. They are much milder than mature cabbage and easy to combine with both fresh and cooked dishes.

Growing Level

Easy

Red Cabbage is a beginner-friendly microgreen that grows reliably with consistent moisture, good airflow and adequate light.

Growing Time

Approximately 8–12 days

Growing conditions such as temperature, light, airflow and watering can influence development. Use the appearance of your microgreens as your main guide when deciding when to harvest.

Soaking

No soaking required.

Seeds can be sown directly onto a thoroughly moistened growing mat.

Germination

After sowing, keep the seeds covered and in darkness during the initial germination period.

Once the seeds have germinated and the young shoots are established, uncover the tray and move it into light.

Watering

Keep the growing mat consistently moist without allowing it to become waterlogged.

Once the roots are established, bottom watering is preferable. Add water to the reservoir tray below and allow the growing mat to absorb moisture from underneath.

Good airflow and balanced moisture help encourage healthy, even growth.

Light

Once uncovered, place your Red Cabbage microgreens in a bright location with good indirect natural light or beneath a suitable grow light.

Adequate light encourages compact growth and helps the leaves and stems develop their characteristic colour.

When to Harvest

Red Cabbage microgreens are generally ready when the stems are well developed and the cotyledons are fully open.

Harvest just above the growing mat using clean scissors or a clean, sharp blade.

Best With

Eggs · Salads · Sandwiches · Wraps · Bowls · Avocado · Fish · Soups

Their mild flavour makes them particularly versatile, while their colourful stems make them beautiful as a fresh finishing green.

Storage

For the best quality, harvest only what you need whenever possible.

If storing harvested microgreens, make sure they are dry before placing them in a clean container in the refrigerator. Excess moisture can shorten their freshness.

Wash before eating and enjoy while fresh.

Good to Know

Red Cabbage belongs to the Brassica family, alongside broccoli, kale and radish.

Fine white root hairs may appear around the roots during germination. These are a normal part of healthy root development and can sometimes be mistaken for mould.

Why Grow Red Cabbage?

Red Cabbage is a beautiful combination of simplicity and colour. Easy to grow and mild enough for everyday use, it brings fresh greens and naturally vibrant tones straight from your growing tray to the plate.

Grow it. Cut it fresh. Add a little colour.
