Broccoli Raab

Everything you need to know about growing, harvesting and enjoying Broccoli Raab microgreens at home.

Fresh · Peppery · Distinctive

Broccoli Raab microgreens are fresh and lively with a more pronounced flavour than the mild Broccoli Calabrese. Their tender green leaves bring subtle peppery and mustard-like notes, making them a lovely choice when you want a little more character without intense heat.

Fresh and versatile, they work particularly well as a finishing green for savoury everyday dishes.

Flavour

Fresh · Peppery · Slightly bitter

Broccoli Raab has a distinctive brassica flavour with gentle peppery notes and a subtle bitterness. Its flavour is more pronounced than Broccoli Calabrese while remaining versatile and easy to pair with food.

Growing Level

Easy

Broccoli Raab is a relatively beginner-friendly microgreen that grows well with consistent moisture, good airflow and adequate light.

Growing Time

Approximately 8–12 days

Growing conditions such as temperature, light, airflow and watering can influence development. Use the appearance and tenderness of your microgreens as your main guide when deciding when to harvest.

Soaking

No soaking required.

Broccoli Raab seeds can be sown directly onto a thoroughly moistened growing mat.

Germination

After sowing, keep the seeds covered and in darkness during the initial germination period.

Once the seeds have germinated and the young shoots are established, uncover the tray and move it into light.

Watering

Keep the growing mat consistently moist without allowing it to become waterlogged.

Once the roots are established, bottom watering is preferable. Add water to the reservoir tray below and allow the growing mat to absorb moisture from underneath.

Good airflow and balanced moisture help encourage healthy, even growth.

Light

Once uncovered, place your Broccoli Raab microgreens in a bright location with good indirect natural light or beneath a suitable grow light.

Adequate light encourages compact growth and helps the leaves develop their fresh green colour.

When to Harvest

Broccoli Raab microgreens are generally ready when the stems are well developed and the cotyledons are fully open and green.

Harvest just above the growing mat using clean scissors or a clean, sharp blade.

Best With

Eggs · Pasta · Salads · Sandwiches · Bowls · Fish · Meat · Mediterranean-inspired dishes

Its slightly stronger flavour makes Broccoli Raab especially good with savoury dishes and richer ingredients.

Storage

For the best quality, harvest only what you need whenever possible.

If storing harvested microgreens, make sure they are dry before placing them in a clean container in the refrigerator. Excess moisture can shorten their freshness.

Wash before eating and enjoy while fresh.

Good to Know

Despite its name, Broccoli Raab has a different flavour character from Broccoli Calabrese. It offers a more pronounced, slightly bitter and peppery taste that reflects the character of mature broccoli raab.

Like many of your other varieties, it belongs to the Brassica family.

Why Grow Broccoli Raab?

Broccoli Raab is a lovely step beyond mild microgreens. It keeps the freshness and tenderness of young greens while bringing a little more depth and personality to the plate.

Grow it. Cut it fresh. Add a little character.
